THE BEGINNINGS :MARIA TRIVELLA

MADAME  TRIVELLA.
Alone tonight,Ari is on another cruise with the Churchills, somewhere in the Caribbean, can't sleep, working on my Memoirs, had an offer from a  Parisian publisher ,20% to the ghost writer, thanks but no thanks I can write on my own .
Maria Trivella's name popped up last night, treated her badly, was my first teacher in Athens, auditioned in the summer of 1937 ,sang something, can't remember what :

--- This is talent,a star in embryo she said to Mother
Madame Trivella  was generous to a fault, for two years taught for free singing, stage acting and French, was fluent in the language
--- It  comes handy, when you sing Carmen and Juliette, all the French repertoire, whatever people say when you know the language, you are more expressive.
Born on the island of Lesbos, had lived four years in Paris and Montpellier where her military husband was stationed.I went to her little house,5 Hoffmann Street, everyday morning till late evening,Madame Trivella knew we were dead broke, gave me free lunch,a sandwitch, sometimes a full meal in the kitchen, feel bad the way we dumped her,she was a good teacher, but after two years I had to move on,wanted to learn the coloratura technique  all in all got some six hundred free lessons,Madame was the best, the most generous teacher I could hoped for when we landed in Athens .
My destiny started there, Mother was a very ambitious woman,go-getter but had no talent in any field,an actress manquee with raging hormones, wanted me to be what she wanted to be,pushed and pushed,I was thirteen, said I was sixteen so I could enrol at the National Conservatory, and apply for a scholarship.and study with the most famous coloratura of the time Elvira de Hidalgo.
